Forget the tulips in the Netherlands. Forget the cherry blossoms in Japan. The color and fragrance of the spring flowering in Fjord Norway have enthralled visitors for years.
Fjord Norway – The Home of the Norwegian Fjords
Fjord Norway gets its name from the many beautiful fjords and it’s one of the few places in the world that offers a chance to see the combination of mountains and fjords.
Outdoor Activities in the Fjord Landscape
The Fjord Norway region is a destination for the traveler who wants an active holiday with plenty of adventures. Hiking with a fjord view, glacier walks, kayak trips and bike tours are all to be found in this stunning landscape.
Heritage and History
The Fjord Norway region has a rich culture and heritage as it’s the site where Norwegian history began. Early migrants followed retreating glaciers north after the last Ice Age ended, founding prehistoric sites that you can visit on your trip. The Viking Age dawned just before the 9th century. Norwegians set out from the fjords in iconic wooden longships to trade, raid and settle across a wide swath of Europe… and even America.
Bergen – The Heart of the Norwegian Fjords
Bergen is the gateway to the Fjords of Norway. As a UNESCO World Heritage City and a European City of Culture, the Bergen region has the ideal combination of nature, culture and exciting urban life all year round.
The Hardangerfjord is the world’s third longest fjord. The area around the fjord consists of magnificent mountains, lively small villages, national parks, local culinary treats and one of Europe’s largest glaciers.
The longest fjord in Norway, Sognefjord, takes you from the coast to the base of the Jostedalen glaciers and Jostedalsbreen National Parks. Along the fjord you'll see high mountain peaks, blue glacier ice, waterfalls, and idyllic small farms.
Ålesund and the Northwest
North of the Sognefjord you will find another area offering some of Norway’s most famous natural and cultural attractions, such as the Art nouveau town Ålesund, the UNESCO fjord Geirangerfjord, the Bird island Runde, the Raumabanen, the Trollstigen road that twists through 11 hairpin bends and the famous Atlantic road.
